Artist Yamazaki Ben'ei
Title The Sixteen Arhats
Biography Yamazaki Ben’ei (1859–1920) was a monk of the Jodo-shū sect, born in Shimofusa Province (present-day Chiba Prefecture). His childhood name was Keinosuke, and his art names included Buddha Zenna, Mushotokushi, and Fukachidoji. He studied under Seiyo Daiko at Kogane Tozen-ji Temple and entered preisthood at Io-ji Temple. His father, Yamazaki Kapei, was a devoted nenbutsu practitioner. Yamazaki traveled to India to visit Buddhist pilgrimage sites. He founded the Komyokai and began promoting the doctrine of Nyoraikomyo Shugi (Doctrine of the Buddha’s Radiant Light).
