Biography Kobayashi Issa (1763-1827) was a Japanese poet born in Sinano (present Nagano prefecture). His childhood name was Yatarō, and his formal given name was Nobuyuki. Although he had many pseudonym including Nirokuan, Haikaiji, and Soseibou, he is most widely known by his Haiku pseudonym, Issa. Learned Haiku poem under Mizoguchi Somaru, the third head of Katsushika school and Nirokuan Chikua. He is renowned for his haiku collection including “Oragaharu”.
