Biography Takuan Soho(1573-1645) was a monk of Rinzai-shu sect born in Tajima Province(present-day Hyogo Prefecture). His surname was Akiba, given name was Sueki, and used Meishi, Tokaiboou as his artname. He studied under Shun’oku Soen of Daitoku-ji’s Sangen-in and Itō Shoteki of Sakai’s Nanshu-ji. He later became the 153rd chief abbot of Daitoku-ji. In 1627, during the Shiei Incident, he was exiled to Kamiyama in Dewa Province (present-day Yamagata prefecture), but eventually returned to Kyoto. He was highly regarded by Emperor Go-Mizunoo and Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. He execelled at haikai poetry, calligraphy, painting, and the tea ceremony.
