Biography Kamisaka Sekka(1866-1942) was a Japanese-style of painter and graphic designer born in Kyoto. His original given name was Yoshitaka. He studied under Suzuki Zuigen from the Shijo school at the age of 16. In 1890, he also studied design for decorative crafts under the designer, Kishi Kokei. In addition, He conducted researches on the Rinpa school which is pronowed for its gorgeous stlye with opulent use of gold, and got significantly influenced. Sekka founded the Katsumi-kai art association, and his younger brother was the Maki-e ( a artvraft by applying decoration by sprinkling gold or silver powder onto a lacquered surface) artist, Kamisaka Yukichi. He later taught at the Kyoto City Senior High School of Art.
