Biography Soga Shohaku was a Japanese painter born in Kyoto prefecture. His family name was Miura. He had several given names, including Teruo, Kiichi, and Terutaka. His courtesy name was Shiryu, his common name was Sakon, and he used various art names such as Dasokuken, Kishinsai, and Joki. Shohaku studied painting under Takada Keiho and deeply admired the works of Soga Jasoku. He even styled himself as the “10th-generation successor to Soga Jasoku.” He maintained a close friendship with Ike Taiga and was known for his eccentric personality, leaving behind numerous colorful anecdotes.

Kakutei was a Japanese painter and Obaku school Buddhist monk, born in Nagasaki. His given name was Jōkō, his courtesy names were Kaigan and Keitatsu, and he used several art names, including Nyose, Gojian, and Hakuyō Sannin.
He entered Shōfuku-ji Temple in Nagasaki and was ordained as a monk, inheriting the Dharma lineage of Gakushū. He later resided at Shiun-in temple. Kakutei studied the Nanpin school of painting under Kumashiro Yuhi. He maintained friendships with prominent literati such as Ike Taiga and Kimura Kenkado, and taught several students, including Katsu Jagyoku. Excelled at ink brush painting.
