Biography Ike Taiga (1723-1776) was a Japanese literati painter, born in Kyoto. His given name was Mumei, and his courtesy names were Kobin and Taisei. Over the course of his career, he used several art names, including Okogyoso, Kasusho, and Chikukyo. He is the founder of Japanese Nanga (Chinese-style painting) school. Studied painting under Yanagisawa Kien and Gion Nankai, then established his own painting style, incorporating the traditions of Japanese painting and the expression methods of Western painting. His pupils include Kimura Kenkado and Aoki Shukuya.
