Artist Saigo Nanshu
Title Calligraphy
Biography Saigo Nanshu(1828-1877)was a Japanese politician born in Satsuma domain(present Kagoshima prefecture). Originally named as Takanaga, later changed to Takamori, and is also known as Nanshu as his pseudonym. He played a key role in forming an alliance with Kido Takayoshi of the Chōshū Domain (now Yamaguchi Prefecture), becoming a central figure in the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. Saigō led government forces during the Boshin War and, following the Meiji Restoration, contributed to the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of the modern prefectural system. After a political falling out, he returned to his hometown, and ultimately took his own life following the defeat in the Satsuma Rebellion (also known as the Seinan War).
