Biography Tomioka Tessai(1837-1924) was a Japanese nanga(Chinese-style painting) painter born in Kyoto. Aspired to be a schoalr, studied Japanese classics, Chinese classics, poetry, and etc. Held several positions such as chief priest of Otori-jinja Shrine. Studied nanga under Oda Kawasen and Yamato-e under Ukita Ikkei. Also studied waka under Otagaki Rengetsu. Established the Nanga Association of Japan with Tanomura Chokunyu. Master of literati painting. Selected as Teishitsu Gigeiin (Imperial art expert) and member of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy.
