Biography Sengai Gibon (1750-1837) was a Japanese monk of Rinzai-shu sect, born in Mino (present southern Gifu Prefecture). The 123th chief priest of Shofuku-ji in Hakata, the first Zen temple in Japan. Learned under Gessen Zenne. Drew many ink paintings in Haiga style with spontaneous brush strokes. One of the masters of modern Zen paintings along with Hakuin Ekaku.
