Biography Matsuo Basho(1644-1694) was the supreme Japanese poet born in Iga Province(present Mie Prefecture). Studied Haikai under Todo Yoshitada(Sengin) and became a pupil of Kitamura Kigin in Kyoto and was passed on "Umoregi," a book of secrets of Renga(linked verse) and Haikai, to Basho. Established "Shofu" (Basho style of the haiku) expressing a verse style with high artistic quality. Known as a great master of haiku.
