Artist Shokado Shojo
Title Sparrows, Cock and Swallows
Biography Shokado Shojo(1582-1639) was a Japanese monk of Shingon sect, calligrapher, and painter, born in Settsu Province(present Osaka Prefecture). Served Konoe Nobutada. Entered Hachiman Shrine in Yawata, Kyoto. Studied Esoteric Buddhism under Hitsuden of Takimoto-bo and became the chief priest of Takimoto-bo Temple. Later retreated and named his secluded hut "Shokado". Known as a "Three Great Brushes of the Kan-ei Period" along with Hon-ami Koetsu and Konoe Nobutada. Excelled at not only painting but also calligraphy, waka(Japanese poem) and tea ceremony.
