Biography	Matsuo Basho(1644-1694) was the supreme Japanese poet born in Iga(present Mie prefecture) . Studied Haikai under Todo Yoshitada(Sengin) and became a pupil of Kitamura Kigin in Kyoto and was initiated into "Komoregi" a book of secrets of Renga(linked verse) and Haikai. Established "Shofu" (Basho style of the haiku) expressing a verse style with high artistic quality. Famous for a great master of haiku. Tomioka Tessai(1837-1924) was a Japanese nanga(Chinese-style painting) painter born in Kyoto. Aspired to be a schoalr, studied Japanese classics, Chinese classics, poetry, and etc. Held several positions such as chief priest of Otori-jinja Shrine. Studied nanga under Oda Kawasen and Yamato-e under Ukita Ikkei. Also studied waka under Otagaki Rengetsu. Established the Nanga Association of Japan with Tanomura Chokunyu. Master of literati painting. Selected as Teishitsu Gigeiin (Imperial art expert) and member of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy.
Description	Tomioka Tessai (painting)/attributed to Matsuo Basho (calligraphy) wash on paper with silk mounting 112 x 31 cm(artwork), 182 x 35 cm(overall) minor traces of bookworms on the paper and bookworm holes on one part of the upper mounting with letter appraised by Tomioka Tessai with letter book appraised by Mizuta Masahide exhibited at Tokuyama Civic Center (1960) with double wooden storage box signed and sealed by the artist
