Artist Otagaki Rengetsu

Biography Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875) was a female Japanese poet born in Kyoto. Studied waka under Chigusa Arikoto. After losing her husband, entered the Buddhist nunhood under Gesshin of Jinko-in Temple. Associated with Rai Mikisaburo, Yanagawa Seigan and Umeda Unpin. Mentor of Tomioka Tessai. Associted with Yanagawa Seigan. The potteries engraved her poems are known as Rengetsu-yaki.
