Biography Gessen (1741-1809) was a Japanese monk and painter born in Owari, present Aichi Prefecture. Born as a son of a miso (bean paste) maker family and became a monk of Jodo-shu and lived at Zojo-ji Temple. Studied painting under Sakurai Sekkan(1715-1790). After moving to Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, studied under Maruyama Okyo(1733-1795). Became the chief priest of Josho-ji Temple in Uji Yamada of Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). Devoted his income earned from the paintings to aid the poor.
