Biography Koizumi Danzan(1770-1854) was a painter born in Shimotsuke Province. His father, Kimura Kazumasa was a Shinto priest at the Kagoshima shrine. At the age of 11, studied painting under Shimazaki Umpo, a pupil of Takada Keiho. Excelled at sketching and drew many paintings of sweetfish. Learned Confucianism and poetry under Tachihara Suiken.
