Biography Yokoi Shonan(1809-1869) was a feudal retainer of Kumamoto Domain, thinker and politician born in Higo Province(present Kumamoto Prefecture). Associated with Fujita Toko when studying in Edo(present Tokyo). Raised his pupils in his founded private school, Shonan-do. Matsudaira Yoshinaga, a feudal lord of the Fukui Domain invited him for the political reform. After the Meiji restoration, was appointed as a senior counselor at the government.

Ishii Soseki(1873-1971) was a seal engraver born in Chiba. Studied under Hamamura Zoroku. After Zoroku's death, studied under Kawai Kyoroku. Later, studied everything related to seal engraving from Okada Suikei. Worked on the spread of seal engraving and trained younger generations. Received the Fourth Order and participated in the Nitten Exhibition.
