Biography Yoshida Shoin(1830-1859) was a Japanese imperialist born in Choshu Province(present Yamaguchi Prefecture) as the second son of Sugi Yurinosuke, a feudal retainer of Nagato Domain. Succeeded the Yamaga-style of military strategy. Studied under Asaka Gonsai, Yamaga Sosui and Sakuma Shozan. His pupils include Takasugi Shinsaku, Kusaka Genzui, Ito Hirobumi and Yamagata Aritomo from his founded private school, Shokason-juku. Executed at the Ansei Purge.

Tsuchiya Shokai(1830-1864) was a feudal retainer of Hagi Domain born in Nagato Province(present Yamaguchi Prefecture). Studied under Sakai Kozan and Hakura Kan. Became a professor at Meirinkan, the Domain school. Excelled at making sentences and even Yoshida Shoin asked him to check and correct the sentences. Also a supporter of Shokason-juku, a private school founded by Yoshida Shoin.
