Biography Tengan Sogyo(1667-1731) was a monk of Soto-shu sect born in Kai Province(present Yamanashi Prefecture). Visited Tenrin-ji Temple and entered the Buddhist priesthood. Traveled around the country and succeeded the teachings of Tokuo Ryoko in Edo. Established Shudo-do Temple in Makigadani in 1714 and called as "Sogyo of Kai."
