Biography Arai Hakuseki(1657-1725) was a Confucian scholar born in Edo (present Tokyo). Learned under Kinoshita Jun-an (1621-1698) and served the 6th shogun, Tokugawa Ienobu. Supported the 7th shogun, Ietsugu for the currency reformation, trade restriction, and judicial reformation. Notable achievements in the developments of historical science of the Occident and Orient and linguistics etc. His well-known works include “Oritaku Shiba-no-ki”.
