Artist Matsuo Basho
Title Waka - Japanese Poem
Biography Matsuo Basho(1644-1694) was the supreme Japanese poet born in Iga(present Mie prefecture). Studied Haikai under Todo Yoshitada(Sengin) and became a pupil of Kitamura Kigin in Kyoto, and was initiated into "Komoregi" a book of secrets of Renga(linked verse) and Haikai. Established "Shofu"(Basho style of the haiku) expressing a verse style with high artistic quality, and was called as a great master of haiku.

Kano Tessai(1845-1925) was a sculptor born in Gifu. Studied Nanga(Japanese painting) and sculpture under his father, and also painting under Maeda Chodo. Excelled at making tea vessels of sencha and was a professor of Tokyo University of the Arts. Contributed to making reproductions of the treasures in Shosoin and Horyuji-temple.
