Title Brushwood Gathering with Haiku
Biography Sakaki Hyakusen(1697-1752) was a Japanese Nanga(Chinese-style painting) painter. Called as the founder of Japanese Nanga paintings along with Hattori Nankaku, Gion Nakai, and Yanagisawa Kien. Known for discernment of calligraphy and Haikai poems. Associated with Ko Yugai.

Nakagawa Otsuyu(1675-1739) was a haiku poet born in Ise Province(present Mie Prefecture). Changed his occupation from a timber merchant to Onshi(a person in charge of maintenance and welcoming visitors at shrine) of Ise Jingu Shrine. Became a pupil of Matsuo Basho and learned haikai under Iwata Ryoto, a pupil of Basho. Excelled at painting as well.
