Biography Fujishima Takeji(1867-1943) was a Western-style painter born in Kagoshima. Studied under Hirayama Togaku and Kawabata Gyokusho. Later changed to Western painting, studied under Matsuoka Hisashi and Yamamoto Hosui, and became a member of the Meiji Arts Association. Went to Paris and studied at the International Arts School in Paris and Rome. After came back to Japan, devoted to teach the younger generation as a professor at the Tokyo School of the Arts. Taught at the Research Institute of Hongo Western Arts and Kawabata Arts School. Was a pillar of the National Arts Exhibition.
