Biography Choon Dokai(1628-1695) was a Japanese monk of Obakushu sect born in Hizen(present part of Nagasaki/Saga Prefecture). Entered the priesthood at the age 13. Visited Ingen Ryuki at Manpukuji Temple and succeeded the teachings after learning under Mokuan Shoto(2nd head priest of Manpukuji Temple). Traveled across the country to devote himself to spread the teachings of Okakushu. Founded Kosaiji Temple, invited by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi at the time of the feudal lord of the Tatebayashi(present southern east part of Gunma Prefecture)domain.
