Artist Aoki Mokubei
Title Tea Cups (five cups and a scroll, 1825)
Biography Aoki Mokubei(1767-1833) was a potter born in Kyoto. Studied pottery under Okuda Ewasen(1753-1811). Associated with Kimura Kenkado, Tanomura Chikuden, Rai Sanyo and Shinozaki Shochiku. Excelled at making tea vessels of akae, sometsuke-utsushi and kochi ware, etc. Known as one of the three masters of Kyoyaki pottery at the end of Edo period with Eiraku Hozen and Ninnami Dohachi.

Tanaka Kakuou(1782-1848) was a founder of the Kagetsu-An school of sencha tea ceremony, born in Osaka. Alongside the brewing business in Osaka, studied the sencha tea style of Baisao and established the Kagetsu-An school of sencha tea. Many literati persons visited him such as Tanomura Chikuden and Rai Sanyo. Asked Aoki Mokubei to make several tea bowls.

Koga Michitsune(1842-1945) was an aristocrat born in Kyoto. Was active as a politician and bureaucrat. Received the rank of Marquis. Also excelled in poetry, calligraphy, playwrite, and lyrics.

Koyama Fujio(1900-1975) was a ceramics researcher and potter. Discovered the kiln of Chinese Hokuso dynasty and became a prominent ceramics scholar worldwide. Published many books such as the research on classic ceramics. In his later years, made the "wooden kiln of flower" in Izumi-cho, Tosa city and created various works including tea bowls as a potter.
