Biography Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828) was a Japanese painter born in Edo (present Tokyo) as the second son of Sakai Tadazane, the lord of Himeji Domain (Hyogo Prefecture). Studied Ukiyo-e under Utagawa Toyoharu in Kyoto. Influenced by Ogata Korin and accomplished the painting style of Edo Rimpa School. Also excelled at Haikai and his notable works include a “Flowering plants of summer and autumn (a pair of 2-hold screens)”

Suzuki Kiitsu(1796-1858) was a Japanese painter born in Edo(present Tokyo). Known as the most prominent pupil of Sakai Hoitsu in the Edo Rimpa School.  His wife was Suzuki Riyo, a sister of Suzuki Reitan, his senior fellow under Hoitsu and became an adopted son-in-law in the Suzuki family. Excelled at bird-and-flower paintings. Acquiring a thorough knowedge of tea ceremony and haikai, associated with a Confucian Kameda Hosai and more. Suzuki Shuitsu was his son.
