Biography Sakai Hoitsu(1761-1828) was a painter born in Edo(present Tokyo) as the second son of Sakai Tadazane, the feudal lord of Himeji Domain(present Hyogo Prefecture). Became a pupil of Monnyo-shonin, the 18th head priest of Nishihongan-ji Temple. Studied Ukiyo-e under Utagawa Toyoharu in Kyoto. Influenced by Ogata Korin and accomplished the painting style of Edo Rimpa school. Also excelled at haikai and his notable works include the “Flowering Plants of Summer and Autumn (a pair of 2-hold screens).”

Suzuki Kiitsu(1796-1858) was a painter born in Edo(present Tokyo). Known as the most prominent pupil of Sakai Hoitsu in the Edo Rimpa school. His wife was Suzuki Riyo, a sister of Suzuki Reitan, his senior fellow under Hoitsu and became an adopted son-in-law in the Suzuki family. Excelled at bird-and-flower paintings. Versed into the tea ceremony and haikai. Associated with a Confucian, Kameda Hosai, etc. Suzuki Shuitsu was his eldest son.
