Biography Otani Koei(1852-1923) was a monk of Jodo Shinshu-sect born in Kyoto. The fourth child of Gonnyo, the 21st head priest of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple. Worked as a person in charge for the cultivation of Hokkaido. Became the 22nd head priest of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple in 1889. Traveled around Europe and devoted himself to modernization of his religious group. Otani Koen was his son.
