Artist Matsuo Basho
Title Bamboo with self-inscription
Biography Matsuo Basho(1644-1694) was the supreme Japanese poet born in Iga Province(present Mie Prefecture). Studied haikai under Todo Yoshitada(Sengin) and became a pupil of Kitamura Kigin in Kyoto and was initiated into "Umoregi," a book of secrets of renga(linked verse) and haikai. Established "Shofu" (Basho style of the haiku) expressing a verse style with high artistic quality. Known as a great master of haiku.

Rogenbo(1688-1747) was a haiku poet born in Mino Province(Gifu Prefecture). A pupil of Kagami Shiko, and established the foundation of Mino school of haikai.

Kumura Kyotai(1732-1792) was a haiku poet born in Owari Province(Aichi Prefecture). Studied haikai under Ren-abo Hakuni. Devoted on the restoration of Basho style of haikai. Praised as a prominent haiku poet along with Oshima Ryota.
