Artist Matsuo Basho
Title Bamboo with self-inscription
Biography Matsuo Basho(1644-1694) was the supreme Japanese poet born in Iga(present Mie prefecture) . Studied Haikai under Todo Yoshitada(Sengin) and became a pupil of Kitamura Kigin in Kyoto and was initiated into "Komoregi" a book of secrets of Renga(linked verse) and Haikai. Established "Shofu" (Basho style of the haiku) expressing a verse style with high artistic quality. Famous for a great master of haiku.
