Artist Aoki Mokubei

Biography Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833) was a Japanese potter born in Kyoto. Studied pottery under Okuda Eisen (1753-1811). Associated with Kimura Kenkado, Tanomura Chikuden, Rai Sanyo and Shinozaki Shochiku. Excelled at making tea vessels of akae, sometsuke-utsushi and kochi ware, etc.

Tomioka Tessai(1837-1924) was a Japanese nanga(Chinese-style painting) painter born in Kyoto. Aspired to be a schoalr, studied Japanese classics, Chinese classics, poetry, and etc. Held several positions such as chief priest of Otori-jinja Shrine. Studied nanga under Oda Kawasen and Yamato-e under Ukita Ikkei. Also studied waka under Otagaki Rengetsu. Established the Nanga Association of Japan with Tanomura Chokunyu. Master of literati painting. Selected as Teishitsu Gigeiin (Imperial art expert) and member of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy.
