Title Fuke Ringing a Bell
Biography Hakuin Ekaku(1685-1768) was a monk of Rinzai-shu sect born in Suruga Province(present part of Shizuoka Prefecture). Entered the Buddhist priesthood under Tanrei of Shoin-ji Temple at the age of 15. Became the head priest of Myoshin-ji Temple in Kyoto in 1718. His pupils include Torei Enji, Suio Genro, etc. Excelled at painting and calligraphy. Known as the restorer of Rinzai-shu sect.
