Biography Mori Ogai (1862-1922) was a Japanese novelist and army surgeon born in Shimane Prefecture, the son of a doctor serving in the Tsuwano Clan. Graduated from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine and served as army surgeon for 35 years. In 1884, he was sent to Germany to study and published “Maihime” after returning to Japan. President of Tokyo Imperial Museum and also the first president of Imperial Fine Arts Academy.
