Artist Kano Sansetsu
Title Moon, Waterfall and Flying Birds
Biography Kano Sansetsu (1590-1651) was a Japanese painter born in Hizen province. Became a pupil of Kano Sanraku after his father died in 1605. Married a daughter of Kano Sanraku who lost his eldest son and became a successor of Sanraku and later a leader of the Kyo Kano (the Kyoto branch of the Kano School). Excelled at bird-and-flower paintings and made supplement works over two scrolls of "33 forms of Kanonon statue" in Tofukuji temple. Conferred Hokkyo(the third highest rank of Buddhist priest) for his painting achievement.
