Biography Jiun Sonja (1718-1804) was a monk of Shingonshu sect, born in Osaka. Studied Buddhism under Ninko Teiki and Daibai Zenji. Known for his research on Sanskrit. Regarded as the greatest calligrapher in early modern Japan. The restorer of the "Shoboritsu" (Vinaya of the True Dharma).
