Artist Kano Sansetsu
Title Bulbul on a Plum / Jurojin on White Deer / Sparrows and Bamboo
Biography Kano Sansetsu (1590-1651) was a Japanese painter born in Hizen province. Became a pupil of Kano Sanraku after his father died in 1605. Married a daughter of Kano Sanraku who lost his eldest son and became a successor of Sanraku and later a leader of the Kyo Kano (the Kyoto branch of the Kano School). Excelled at bird-and-flower paintings and made supplement works over two scrolls of "33 forms of Kanonon statue" in Tofukuji temple. Conferred to Hokkyo(the third highest rank of Buddhist priest) for his painting achievement.
