Biography |
Sesshu Toyo(1420-1506) was a Japanese monk of Rinzai-shu and the most prominent painter of ink/wash painting, born in Bicchu Province (present Okayama Prefecture). Learned painting under Shubun of Shokoku-ji temple in Kyoto. Left for Suo (present east part of Yamaguchi prefecture) and established his atelier called “Unkokuan” and went to study the Chinese ink painting in Ming (present China). Remarkable achievement in the field of Japanese ink painting. |
