Biography Sesshu Toyo(1420-1506) was a Japanese monk of Rinzai-shu and the most prominent painter of ink/wash painting, born in Bicchu Province (present Okayama Prefecture). Learned painting under Shubun of Shokoku-ji temple in Kyoto. Left for Suo (present east part of Yamaguchi prefecture) and established his atelier called “Unkokuan” and went to study the Chinese ink painting in Ming (present China) . Remarkable achievement in the field of Japanese ink painting.
