Biography Rai Sanyo (1780-1832) was a Confucian scholar, born in Aki Province. Studied under Bido Jishu and Kan Sazan. Left Hiroshima Domain; established and lived in the Residence of Sanshisuimei-sho in Kyoto. Written works include "Nihon Gaishi" (Unofficial History of Japan). His three sons were also well-known Confucian scholars.

Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833) was a Japanese potter born in Kyoto. Studied pottery under Okuda Eisen (1753-1811). Associated with Kimura Kenkado, Tanomura Chikuden, Rai Sanyo and Shinozaki Shochiku. Excelled at making tea vessels of akae, sometsuke-utsushi and kochi ware, etc.
