Biography Fujiwara no Teika (1162–1241) was a prominent poet born into a noble court family in Kyoto. His Buddhist posthumous name was Mojo. He was the son of the distinguished poet Fujiwara no Toshinari and Bifukumon’in no Kaga. Teika studied waka poetry under his father, who served as the poetry tutor to Kujō Kanezane. He later rose to prominence in the poetic circle of Emperor Go-Toba. Teika was one of the principal compilers of two imperial anthologies, the Shin Kokin Wakashu and the Shin Chokusen Wakashu. In addition to his poetic achievements, he made significant contributions to the editing and scholarly study of classical Japanese literature.
