Biography Tomimoto Kenkichi was a Japanese potter born in Nara. He graduated from the Architecture Division of the Design Department at the Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), and later studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. After returning to Japan, he developed a close friendship with British potter Bernard Leach, which sparked his deep interest in ceramics. Tomimoto went on to pursue pottery in earnest, creating refined designs based on sketching f rooted in his own aesthetic sensibilities. His work encompassed a wide range of techniques, including white porcelain, blue-and-white ware (sometsuke), overglaze enamels (iroe), and gold and silver decoration.
He was designated a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Property) and received the Order of Culture, one of Japan’s highest honors for cultural achievement.
