Biography Shibusawa Eiichi (1840~1931) was a prominent Japanese industrialist born in Saitama Province. As a youth, he was known as Eiichirō and later as Tokutarō. He studied The Analects of Confucius under his cousin, Odaka Atsutada. He went on to serve Tokugawa Yoshinobu of the Hitotsubashi family and later accompanied Tokugawa Akitake, Lord of the Mito Domain, on a diplomatic mission to Europe that greatly influenced his worldview.
Upon returning to Japan, he established a commercial exchange office in Shizuoka prefecture. He was later invited to join the Meiji government and served in the Ministry of Finance. As the first president of the First National Bank of Japan, he was also deeply committed to public welfare and social enterprise throughout his life.
