Biography Shibata Zeshin (1807-1878) was a Japanese painter and makie master born in Edo (present Tokyo). At the age of eleven, started leaning makie under Koma Kansai, the 1st, and also learned painting under Suzuki Nanrei. Later, moved to Kyoto and learned under Okamoto Toyohiko, Rai Sanyo and Kagawa Kageki. Selected as a Teishitsu Gigeiin (Imperial art expert). His pupils include Ikeda Taishin (makie master).
