Biography Toko Shinetsu (1639-1695) was a monk of Sotoshu sect born in Zhejiang Province of China. Entered the Buddhist priesthood at Yongfu Temple in the West Lake of Hangzhou. Came to Japan at the invitation of Chini Doryo of Nagasaki Kofuku-ji Temple. Spread the art of seal engraving in early modern Japan. The founder of Mito Gion-ji Temple. Excelled at literary works, calligraphy and painting.
