Biography Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598) was a Japanese warlord born in Owari (present Aichi Prefecture). Initially served Oda Nobunaga as samurai of lowest rank, Ashugaru and gradually became one of Nobunaga’s most reliable lieutenants. Eventually unified Japan after he defeated Akechi Mitsuhide to avenge his master’s death in Honno-ji incident.
