Biography Shinran-shonin (1173-1262) was the founder of Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism, born in Kyoto. Lost both parents at an early age and entered the Buddhist priesthood under Priest Jien. Practiced at the Enryaku-ji at Mt. Hiei and later became the pupil of Honen-shonin. Suppressed and exiled to Echigo (Niigata). Later, spread the nembutsu teaching around Hitachi Province and eventually returned to Kyoto. Writings include "Kyogyoshinsho: On Teaching, Practice, Faith, and Enlightenment".

  • a six-fold screen focuses on the Jodo Shinshu temples but also includes the temples, shrines and castles in the Kanto region: the first, second, and third panels from the right depict Hitachi and Shimosa Province; the fouth panel depicts Simotsuke Province; the fifth panel depicts Edo; the sixth panel depicts Kamakura.
