Biography Hjikata Torei (1741-1807) was a Japanese painter born in Inaba (presently east part of Tottori Prefecture). Learned the Nanbin style of painting from So Shiseki in Edo(present Tokyo) and also under Maruyama Okyo in Kyoto. Excelled at bird-and-flower paintings. Became an official painter for the Tottori Domain by the fuedal lord Ikeda Narikuni in 1798.
