Biography Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) was a Japanese painter and makie craftman born in Edo(present Tokyo). Started studying makie(gold lacquer technique) under Koma Kansa the first at the age of eleven. Studied painting under Suzuki Nanryo and moved to Kyoto to study more. Also studied with Okamoto Toyohiko, Rai Sanyo and Kagawa Keiju. Shoji Chikushin (1854-1936) was a Japanese painter born in Edo(present Tokyo). Studied painting under Shibata Zeshin.
