Biography

Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841) was a Japanese painter born in Edo (now Tokyo). Chief retainer of Tahara domain of Mikawa Province. Interacted with other scholars such as Takano Choe and Koseki Sanei, and established Shoshi-kai together. Studied Confucianism under Sato Issai and Matsuzaki Kodo; studied painting under Shirakawa Shizan and Tani Buncho.

Watanabe Shoka(1835-1887) was a Japanese painter born in Edo (now Tokyo). The second son of Watanabe Kazan. At the age of 7, left for Edo after his father's death and studied painting under Tsubaki Chinzan, a pupil of Kazan. Later, also studied under Fukuda Hanko. Succeeded reigns of the family and served as chief retainer of the Tahara domain. Excelled at bird-and-flower painting.

Yamashita Seigai (1858-1942) was a Japanese painter born in Totomi (now Shizuoka). Studied painting under Watanabe Shoka. Connoisseur of artworks by Watanabe Kazan and Tsubaki Chinzan.
