Biography

Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1768) was a monk of Rinzaishu sect, born in Suruga Province. Entered the Buddhist priesthood under Tanrei of Shoin-ji Temple at the age of 15. Became the head priest of Myoshin-ji Temple in Kyoto in 1718. His pupils include Tourei Enji, Suio Genro, and etc. Excelled at painting and calligraphy. Known as the restorer of Rinzaishu sect.

Akino Kodo (1858-1934) was a monk of Sotoshu sect born in Totomi Province. Studied under Nishiari Bokuzan. The President of Sotoshu University (now Komazawa University). The chief priest of Kasui-sai Temple in Shizuoka Prefecture and Soji-ji Temple. Became the chief abbot of Sotoshu sect in 1930. His written works include "Shobogenzo kowa" and "Zenshu koyo".
